Non-compete restrictions

Geography, duration, and type of work — what is reasonable for freelance contracts.

Three limits

Non-competes should be bounded by time, geography, and activity. A ban on all competing work nationwide for two years is hard to justify for a short project.

Enforceability varies

Courts in different countries treat non-competes differently. Even unenforceable wording can still lead to expensive disputes.

Negotiation angles

Ask to narrow the restriction to direct competitors, named accounts, or a shorter period tied to the engagement length.
